A long-standing favourite tipple, Plymouth Gin was one of the few gins to have a geographic indication, obviously pertaining to its eponymous city. However, Plymouth Gin lost this indication in 2015, although it is still of course produced in the city. This is the original gin from the distillery, crafted from seven botanicals in a pot still with a rather short neck, and is blended with Dartmoor water. It is then bottled into the classic ‘shaving bottle’, with its distinctive green glass.
- Aroma: Inviting and rich, with a prominent juniper scent that is balanced by notes of coriander and cardamom.
- Taste: Extremely smooth and creamy, with a harmonious blend of juniper, citrus (like orange and lemon peel), and subtle spice.
- Botanicals: Its unique flavor comes from a specific blend of seven botanicals: juniper, coriander, cardamom, orange peel, lemon peel, orris root, and angelica root.
- Finish: Lingering, clean, and crisp, with a refreshing citrus and spice character.
- Plymouth Gin is known for being a more “earthy” and softened gin compared to the sharper “London Dry” style, due to its higher proportion of root botanicals like orris and angelica.
- It has a slight sweetness that balances the dryness.
- It is often considered a versatile gin for cocktails, with a flavor that remains prominent even in drinks with powerful ingredients.
